Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is the Lymph Vessel System?

A network of pathways throughout the body, carrying fluid (lymph), picked up between the tissues, filtered through the lymph nodes, and returned to the venous blood circulation. This network picks up cellular debris, bacteria, proteins, minerals, fats and germs along the way, sort of like a sanitation system… then heads to the nodes which are located in clusters all through the body. It’s main function is regulating and maintaining fluid levels of the body. It also has a very close relationship with immunity and protects against infections, being part of the lymphatic system.

What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)?

MLD is a type of gentle massage that promotes lymph fluid circulation. Using light rhythmic strokes - as the lymph system lies very superficially below the skin- the practitioner follows the flow of lymph and guides it to the nodes. There are deeper lymph nodes located in the abdomen so the pressure will be more intense there. This slow, light cadence can be very effective and very relaxing as well.

Who can benefit from MLD

People with lymphedema, fibromyalgia, and other illnesses dealing with inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis. It can also help those who have recently undergone some types of cosmetic surgery or lymph node removal. People who get surgery typically start MLD between one to two weeks after their procedure.

Some benefits of MLD

~Reducing swelling and preventing the collection of fluids

~Promotion of toxin flushing

~Prevents the formation of fibrosis and scar tissue

~Stimulates the healing of wounds
